If the title of this sermon seems wrong to you, it's supposed to! When we hear Jesus at our feet, maybe our first instinct is to think, "isn't it supposed to be the other way around?" And the answer is both yes and no. Yes, Jesus is worthy of our worship, of us falling at his feet. And yes, he has no need to stoop down or get anywhere close to our feet. And yet this is what he does, not just for the 12 disciples but for us! The one worthy of all honour and praise stoops down to love his beloved. And this shows us who our God is. It is in his nature to love in lowliness and to sacrifice to be close to us. He is, as Jesus puts it, "gentle and lowly in heart." As we'll see in this passage, while Jesus' lowly love may be astounding and beautiful, it is hard for us to receive. It is hard to let Jesus love us in our mess and let him lead us into the mess of others. Yet we'll also see that however much we might resist him and try to deal with our mess on our terms, Jesus gently insists on getting low to love us and remind us that he has made us clean. May we let the good news of Jesus at our feet take hold of us, that we might enjoy his love and let him lead us into loving others in lowliness as he does.
