Passage: John 4:43-54

When a royal official who has heard about Jesus comes to him begging him to heal his son, Jesus calls out the man and all of those present for being interested in him only because of his signs. This may seem like insensitivity on Jesus’ part, but far from it. Jesus, perceiving the inauthenticity of the man’s current faith, wants to call him to a deeper faith by inviting him to trust his word that he will find his son living rather than trusting signs. And that’s exactly what happens – the man goes believing and finds his son alive. It is this kind of belief that Jesus is leading us to as well. Jesus challenges us to move from being fans of him because of his signs (things he does for us) to having true faith in him because of his word.
