Passage: John 19:28-30

Jesus' famous words, "It is finished," that he cried out on the cross before he breathed his last leaves us in awe and wonder. Throughout his earthly ministry, Jesus, intentionally and purposefully, walked toward the cross and accepted his mission to reconcile us to himself through his sacrificial death on the cross. He says, "It is finished," because his mission to rescue us from our sin and shame was accomplished. His goal of paying the full payment that was owed by us for our sins was completely and perfectly achieved. In addition to his intentional accomplishment of his redemptive plan, Jesus tells us that it is finished because he perfected our salvation. We do not need to add anything else. The evil one's favourite tactic is to make us doubt that our salvation was perfectly achieved by Jesus. He causes us to second guess our salvation and continue to live in shame. However, Jesus calls us to receive his gift of salvation and give God glory by living freely for his mission. You are forgiven; you are worthy; you are redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ; your life is significant; you are loved by the eternal, unchanging mighty God--to the point of him giving his life for you to be reconciled to him. Your shame has been removed; you can let it go. You don't need to live with your shame hanging over you; God desires for you to leave it at the foot of the cross and live a free life as a gift from Jesus who paid it all.
