Passage: Nehemiah 7:1-73
In chapter 7, Nehemiah faces a new challenge in re-establishing Jerusalem. He's built the walls, finished the gates, and demonstrated wise decision-making in navigating foreign affairs and internal political division; he now faces the problem of repopulation and reordering the community of God's people.
But this challenge is so much more than that. Nehemiah recognizes that what he's really doing when he begins this next project is reorienting Jerusalem to reflect its ultimate purpose: to be the worship centre of a faithful and God-fearing people in close covenant relationship with God, continuing the legacy of those who came before.
And this is precisely what makes Nehemiah chapter 7 so incredibly relevant for us today. Our goal as Christ followers is to be faithful and God-fearing people, enjoying a deep abiding relationship with Jesus and fellow Christians in community, impacting our world for the gospel and leaving a legacy of faith for the next generation.
