Passage: Nehemiah 5:1-13
Nehemiah addresses social injustice and exploitation of fellow Jewish people in this chapter. Leading by example, he calls people to repent and forms a community that is centred around God's compassion and grace. In a culture where the bar for faithfulness is so low, God calls us to a radically higher standard of faithfulness. Instead of seeking to do the bare minimum of what is lawful or not having cheated anyone, God invites us to a life of generosity and kindness that cares for the poor and the marginalized. When we allow God's compassion, love, and grace to be centrepieces of our community, we can truly follow Jesus in his way of honouring God's people and upholding justice.
