Serving the Downtown Eastside for over 40 Years

30Jan, 2025

The Food on the Corner Society (FCS) was founded 42 years ago by Hermann Glockl as a soup kitchen for the Downtown Eastside. Every Saturday, FCS sets up at 222 Main Street to serve the community warm meals and showcase Jesus through our words and actions. The people we serve, come to the truck due to the economic challenges of inner-city life in the Downtown Eastside. Until the COVID-19 pandemic, we had never missed a Saturday in our decades of service. After a brief, nine-week pause, FCS was designated an essential service and we returned to our location.

Entirely run by volunteers, Food on the Corner relies on the generosity and commitment of individuals to make their work possible. The volunteers contribute in the following ways:

  • Drivers: load supplies on Fridays or drive the truck with volunteers on Saturdays;
  • Line Servers: serve meals @ 222 Main Street every Saturday from 11AM to 12:30PM;
  • Soup and Sandwich Makers: prepare food and load the truck on Saturdays between 9:30 and 10AM; and
  • Board Members: serve on our board for three years, attending monthly meetings to guide the ministry.

Many people serve on this team, but there is always room for more volunteers to help in all areas.

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.”

The Lord sends us many people who we will always serve, without judgement. Our ultimate hope is to see lives transformed through Jesus. And, since January 1983, Food on the Corner has been a beacon of hope in the Downtown Eastside.
