It is amazing just how far we have come in three years at SDBC Tutoring! The program started the 2020/21 school year with one tutor and one student from South Park Elementary.
Today, we have three fully trained tutors who are working with nine students from five schools in Ladner and Tsawwassen; we have doubled our enrolment since last school year. The students are from South Park Elementary, Ladner Elementary, Beach Grove Elementary, Holly Elementary, and South Delta Secondary. Most of our students are in grades 4-6, as this is the most helpful time for this type of tutoring.
Through SDBC Tutoring, we have created a program that meets the students where they are at. For our students, we are a soft place to land after a long day at school. Each student is a unique individual and they learn in their own way, at their own pace. There is one student who attends our program who came to us in grade 3; she was eight years old at the time. When she joined us, she had poor memory recall and struggled to retain the information that she would learn at school. Now, she is in grade 5. She has worked very hard during her time with us. Her report card is now marked with meeting expectations or exceeding expectations! This means that she is back up to reading and writing at grade level! This young lady now walks into our tutoring room with her head held high, with confidence that she can take on the world.
SDBC Tutoring is meeting its growth goals and is meeting the tangible needs of our community, however, in order to continue doing so, we are in need of the financial support of our community and church family. A different initiative of ours, Starfish Pack South Delta, has received overwhelming support, and we will not need to ask for support for a few years, so if you are looking for a different program to support, we ask that you prayerfully consider SDBC Tutoring.
