Saying Goodbye to Another Year at First Steps

13Jul, 2023

"Goodbye until next time and have a real great time!"

We sang our final goodbye song of the school year and sent twenty little children off from preschool into various kindergarten classes around Ladner and Tsawwassen. Saying goodbye at the end of June to the children and their families always stirs up lots of emotions. For some families, this is the end of their preschool season. For others, they are just beginning this new journey. Out of the 100+ students I have personally sent off into kindergarten, I've never had a problem keeping my emotions in check. This year was an exception. For the first time, one little boy made me tear up when he came up to the podium to "graduate." Every child who graduates from First Steps leaves with a little bit of our hearts and this little one tugged on my heart more than usual.

No matter the age of child, the environment you are teaching in, or the curriculum being taught, teaching requires a certain set of skills. Having knowledge, and being resourceful, patient, and empathic are necessities, however, a good sense of humour gets us through most days! This school year was filled with many ups and downs. As a team, our teachers took on all the classroom challenges with grace, patience, and discernment. Each of our preschool teachers brings something different to the preschool program. Megan is creative, organized, and observant. Heather is patient, intuitive, and gentle. Kim is playful, energetic, and wise. It is a joy to work alongside these gifted teachers. We love what we do and are reminded daily that children are fearfully and wonderfully created by God.

The First Steps teaching team is looking forward to summer break and time to rest and recover from the past school year. We will be back in the classroom in late August to plan and get ready to welcome the returning children and many new families who will attend for the first time. Please pray for First Steps Preschool over the summer; for our teachers, the children, and their families.

There is still some space available in both the 3-year-old and 4-year-old program for September. For information regarding enrolment, please email me, Katie Yakiwchuk, Director of First Steps, or click here to visit our website.
