Giving Thanks in All Circumstances

10Oct, 2024

A couple Sunday's ago, Paul spoke on the impact of gratitude in a person's life. I really appreciated the practical 5-4-3-2-1 challenge he gave us. It has helped me recognize daily just how much we can be thankful for, if we take the time to notice. The application went something like this:

  • identify FIVE things God has given you that you're thankful for;
  • identify FOUR things you enjoy about life;
  • identify THREE things that you're looking forward to;
  • identify TWO things you got this year that maybe you didn't have to earn or deserve, and
  • identify ONE thing that you know to be true that will never change.

I'm sure if you didn't already complete this challenge that Sunday morning, you could take a few minutes right now to recognize the many ways God has blessed you. Even as the Apostle Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, during times of trial and sorrow, in all circumstances, we can still be in the practice of giving thanks. This is not to make light of our suffering. This past year certainly hasn't been easy for me or my family, but I can honestly say, one of the ways God has met me in my grief, frustration, and pain, has been through gratitude.

If you have ever been around a genuinely thankful person, you will know what I am talking about. Along with softness, graciousness, and humility, people of gratitude exude a contentment that is extraordinary. They see the world doesn't owe them anything. They are free from the grip of entitlement and pride. They have their eyes wide open to the gifts that are constantly given to them. Their hands are equally humble to receive these gifts. And they are quick to direct their thanks to the Father, the giver of good gifts, and to those around them who have been helpful to them. I have a way to go, but I would love to be known as a truly thankful person. I know this is God's will for me. I know this is a pure act of worship. I have been given much; may I be thankful much! Perhaps you'll join me in this discipline of gaining gratitude.

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all!
