Finding Community through Learning English

07Sep, 2022

As you may have heard, Grace (Minae) Kim, our Director of Korean Ministry, has joined us on our staff to launch a Korean Ministry within our church community. Grace has been working on a few ways in which our church family could serve the Korean speaking community with whom we are hoping to build a relationship in order for us to share the love of Jesus with them. One project we are currently pursuing is offering an ELL (English Language Learners) program for the Korean mothers in our community that come with their children to study English. Because these mothers' primary goal in moving to Canada is to help their children learn English (the lingua franca), they are mostly focused on supporting their children while they are here for a few years. However, many of these mothers experience loneliness and a lack of community because they have left their homes and they are not confident in their English to plug into a new community in South Delta.

For these newcomers to our community, having the opportunity to learn English in a loving community is a real gift. We are fulfilling a need for them in this way. Learning English helps them find community in Canada. We have run similar ELL programs in the past, and it has led to opportunities for people to find community within the ELL class, and it has given us the opportunity to share the gospel and the love of Jesus with many people. We trust that God will provide more opportunities for us to share his love with others through this ELL program. Our goal is to begin this class on September 20th, and we need volunteers to help with the teaching in this program and to attend these classes to help people feel welcomed to our community. We are hoping to practice "Radical Hospitality and Meaningful Connections" through our ELL program. So, if you are interested in being a teacher, or if you are interested in a non-teaching position to help people feel welcomed as a conversation partner during the class, we would love to hear from you. Please email Grace if you are interested in helping with this ministry. And please pray for Grace and the team as we launch this program for God's glory.
