We have hosted a small group bible study in our home for more than 30 years. Over the years, our group has included young parents and working couples to new believers searching for answers. Despite the differences, everybody seems to lead very busy lives.
About five or six years ago, we were introduced to RightNow Media, a free, video-based platform featuring a wide range of topics and bible studies. Most sessions are led by excellent presenters and include a downloadable study guide (usually available through a QR code for easy access). The variety of material seems endless, and the quality ranges from excellent to outstanding. Many of the presenters are world-class teachers.
In the past, we have used study guides that members would take home and complete during the week, then we would review them at our weekly get-together. But this format can be a burden to busy lives, would often not get completed, and people would beat themselves up for not having completed the work. Some would not even attend due to guilt.
RightNow Media has changed that, as homework is optional, each video is generally 9-12 minutes, allowing for at least 45 - 60 minutes of discussion on the bible verses. The study guides offer great questions to prompt discussions and challenge perspectives.
This format has become the norm for our current group of 18. Once we finish a book or topic, we have a potluck dinner and choose our next study. The bible studies on Romans and Ephesians have all been well received from our group, both presented by excellent teachers. A personal favourite would have to be Genesis, by Charlie Dates.
