Making Sense of the World

10Mar, 2022

We may be living through the most challenging time of our generation. In times like this, we struggle to make sense of everything that is going on in the world. All of us form a worldview, and we view the world through this paradigm. A worldview is a philosophical framework through which a person makes sense of the world. Sometimes, significant events happen in our lives that challenge our established worldviews, and our understanding of the world changes. I believe we're living through such times.

If you subscribed to the "American Dream," you believed that you could attain prosperity in life if you worked hard to achieve a certain level of stature. If you are watching what is happening with the pandemic, political polarization, and the violence in Ukraine, you realize that many people have no real shot at the American Dream, and that we don't have as much control as we would like. If you had a more cynical worldview, you're not surprised by the injustice and loss of innocent lives. However, this worldview offers very little hope for humanity, and this way of making sense of the world only adds to the anxiety of our world.

The bible offers a compelling worldview. It paints a realistic view of the world where it is broken and in need of a saviour. The bible shares stories of people in history that lived, failed, and were redeemed by God's grace. I am compelled by these stories because I can relate to them. Just as I fail and struggle in life, Abraham, David, Peter, and others also failed. This worldview is realistic, but it is also filled with hope and a vision for a better world through the power of God's love. Jesus says, "In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." When your worldview falls apart in light of recent events, I invite you to consider Jesus to be your worldview that helps you make sense of the world and move forward with faith, hope, and love even in the hardest of times. Take heart.
